It was family separation and “kids in cages” that first compelled me to the US southern borderlands. I needed to see for myself the horrors the headlines then described. What I found was worse than I ever imagined:
A humanitarian crisis caused by a global backlash against kindness and compassion.
What I learned on that first trip, in January 2020, was that the many-headed hydra that is the US immigration “system” is decades old, was built by presidents on both sides of the aisle, and has become the country’s most shameful export. I discovered that the “system” grew up alongside me, hiding in plain sight all around me, and that what some deem “broken” is working just fine for the fearmongers and demagogues that profit from it.
