America’s news media are under attack like never before. Public broadcasting has lost its federal funding. Major print and broadcast news organizations, owned by billionaires and corporations, have compromised their founding principles and hence their effectiveness as watchdogs on abuse of power. Hedge funds and private equity gobble up newspapers and chains, stripping them for parts and plundering them. And journalism has become one of the most-rapidly-shrinking professions in the country for the past two decades.
