About Tibor Rutar

I'm an assistant professor of sociology at the Faculty of Arts (University of Maribor) and a research associate at the Research Center for Strategy and Governance (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana).

My primary research interests are in economic and political sociology, where I'm working on global issues from both contemporary and deep-historical perspectives.

My quantitative research is mostly oriented towards the workings of socio-economic systems and macro-processes, such as capitalism, democracy, and globalization, and their possible correlates, like inequality, income, poverty, and peace and violence. I am especially interested in causal inference and the credibility revolution in quantitative social science. My theoretical work explores rational choice theory, its various extensions, and cultural evolution.

I'm the author of two books, Rational Choice and Democratic Government (Routledge, 2021) and Capitalism for Realists (Routledge, 2023), and research papers in journals, such as Journal of Comparative Economics, Social Science Research, Cross-Cultural Research, European Journal of Political Economy, International Journal of Comparative Sociology, Theory and Society, International Review of Sociology, Journal of Peace Research, American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Journal of Historical Sociology, International Journal of Sociology, Social Science Information, and the like.
