I never set out to become a small ship cruise director.

But at 23, a directionless college graduate, hiding depression and recovering from mono, I lied my way into a job as an assistant cruise director aboard a 100-passenger ship. I expected palm trees and adventure, “finding myself” on the shores of distant islands.

What I got was a job that smacked me in the face. A workplace I couldn’t leave (unless I wanted to swim to shore). And 100 senior citizen passengers who became the most unlikely mentors imaginable.
