About Long Live the ABB

Long Live the ABB: Conversation from the crossroads of Southern music, history, and culture.

Why the Allman Brothers Band?

I’m a historian and my latest book, Play All Night! Duane Allman and the Journey to Fillmore East, chronicles Duane Allman’s founding of the band and its landmark album, At Fillmore East.

Duane founded an American institution, one that played a distinctly American music that melded blues, r&b, rock, soul, folk, country and western, and jazz into a sound uniquely theirs.

And though Duane died in 1971, the band carried on without him (more or less with the same spirit) until 2014.
