About Annie Grant
My name is Samuél [sam-well] Lopez-Barrantes,
which is Spanish for Samuel. The accented “é” is important because otherwise my name would be pronounced [sam-yule] or [sam-you-well], and that ain’t me.
I’ve lived in Paris since 2010, where I currently work as novelist, musician & literary/historical guide focusing on 19th & 20th century European history.
Early Years
I was born in France to a Spanish father and North Carolinian mother. I grew up alongside my twin brother, Aaron Lopez Barrantes, in Chapel Hill / Durham, NC, which is the setting of my first novel, Slim and The Beast.
In 2022, inspired by various artists’ choice to go independent, including Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Radiohead’s In Rainbows, I bought back my publishing rights to that book, co-founded the Paris-based publisher Kingdom Anywhere with my wife, the photographer Augusta Sagnelli, and published my second novel, The Requisitions, as well as reissued a revised Slim and The Beast: 10th Anniversary Edition.
