About Byzantio explained
Βυζάντιο Explained is an academic platform—anchored in podcasting, editorial work, and research promotion—founded in 2021 by Gavriil-Ioannis Boutziopoulos and Panagiotis Mermigkas. As Greek scholars in Byzantine Studies (Gavriil-Ioannis as a PhD candidate at the University of Birmingham, Panagiotis with an MA in Local History from Democritus University of Thrace), we aim to bring Byzantium into sharper, more honest focus. Our mission is to present Byzantium as it really was—eschewing ideological distortions, embracing complexity, and demonstrating how Byzantine legacies continue to resonate today.
In each episode, the hosts invite scholars to discuss their work, new publications in the field, intriguing facets of Byzantine history and society, and topics of broader academic relevance. To date, guests have included Giannis Stouraitis, Nikos Tsivikis, Georgios Theotokis, Dionysios Stathakopoulos, Dimitris Krallis, Flavia Vanni, and Luca Zavagno, among others.
In addition to the podcast, they have also produced an audio documentary about Byzantine history, which is written and narrated by Dr Dimitrios Bogdantsalis.
